Comments by Donna Thomas:

The South Carolina Litter Control Association Lower Region group award is an award presented to a group or organization of people who have gone above and beyond with litter clean ups, beautification projects and preserving the environment.  Many groups in the Lower Region of the South Carolina Litter Control Association that fit this mold and we are proud of you all and commend you for all that you do to make South Carolina the beautiful state that it is.
Tourism is a very important part of our economy in the lower region of South Carolina.  We have beautiful beaches and lovely downtown areas for tourist to visit.  Without the help of our local volunteers, we would not have these picturesque areas for all to enjoy.
Many towns and organizations came to mind during the selection process for this group award. This particular town has acquired a parcel of land along the coast to preserve and transform into a beautiful public park for local residents and tourist to enjoy and learn about the history and shrimp industry of our coast.  This town has worked with other area organizations to preserve the natural and agricultural way of life that this area has always been and should continue to be.
The town is Edisto Beach along with T.I.D.E. (The Image and Design of Edisto) and Keep Edisto Beautiful.  The hard working people and volunteers of this area are doing an outstanding job of transforming the Bell Buoy Property into a wonderful environmental education site that will be a huge asset to the surrounding area.   The Town of Edisto Beach participates each year in the Great American Clean up and The Beach / River Sweep with many volunteers. Edisto Beach, T.I.D.E. and Keep Edisto Beautiful have worked together to clean up many areas and bike paths on the island for the local residents and tourist to enjoy. Keep Edisto Beautiful participates in educational anti litter puppet shows and contests at the area schools to get the younger crowd involved with litter clean ups and awareness.
If you haven’t been to Edisto Island, I encourage you to visit this lovely area; it’s a way of life. The Town of Edisto Beach, T.I.D.E. and Keep Edisto Beautiful are a huge asset to the Lower Region of South Carolina We thank you for all that you have done to preserve Edisto Beach for our future generations to enjoy.
